03:06 Zagreb, Croatia

Zagreb is one of my favorite city in the Balkans for a number of reasons
One of the best cost benefit relations in the Balkans, relatively affordable living and high quality of life.
Close proximity to other areas and countries beyond the Balkans, such as Italy, Austria and Hungary.
Real estate in Zagreb is relatively affordable, considering we are talking about an EU capital, with a good number of offers below 2000 EUR per sq meter
Zagreb is in fact much more affordable than cities on the coast of Croatia, and the city is lively year round.

04:22 Sofia, Bulgaria

We can start talking about Sofia by saying that it is the cheapest capital in the European Union
Sofia is a large city, it is in fact the third largest in the Balkan region, with 1.3 million inhabitants
Being a large city, Sofia won’t lack entertainment options (nightlife, restaurants)
It is also easy to get in and out of Sofia, with many direct flights from the Bulgarian capital to many European cities. However the transport infrastructure by land is lacking in terms of options and quality.

05:43 Ljubljana, Slovenia

Ljubljana is the small, charming capital of Slovenia, the wealthiest country in the Balkan region.
Slovenia was once part of Yugoslavia, and even back then, it was known for being wealthier than all other republics which made up Yugoslavia.
Since its independence, Slovenia grew both in economic and social terms, and now is one of the countries with the highest quality of life in Europe.
Ljubljana itself is a charming stereotypical European city with a castle overlooking its beautiful old town.

06:43 Istanbul

Istanbul is by far the largest city in the Balkans, although just its European part is in the Balkan peninsula.
The largest city in the Balkans is also the largest in Turkey, with more than 10 million inhabitants. The second largest city in the Balkans is Bucharest with slightly more than 2 million inhabitants.
Apart from its bustling city life and many entertainment options, Istanbul (and all of Turkey) is extremely inexpensive. This applies to property prices, entertainment or even supermarket prices.
Istanbul’s New Airport makes this Turkish city the most well connected city in the Balkans and one of the top in the world.

07:56 Coast of Montenegro

The Coast of Montenegro is another place you should consider to have a base in the Balkans
Montenegro has one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world.
Montenegro is also one of the easiest countries to get residency, which can be done easily by setting up a company in the country, or by buying property in the country.

08:35 Split

Split is the second largest city in Croatia, and one of the best places to live in the Balkans,
Split is the most populous city on the Adriatic sea, so it offers the perfect combination if you want to enjoy the seaside but also have the convenience of urban life.
Split also is the Adriatic city with the best transport infrastructure, there are direct flights from Split to a number of European destinations, as well as rail connections to Zagreb and from there to other parts of Europe
The convenience and beauty of Split come at a cost.

09:25 Belgrade and Novi Sad (Serbia)

Two cities that you should definitely consider if you want to spend some time or live in the Balkans are Belgrade and Novi Sad
They are the capital and the second largest city in Serbia, and are separated by a distance of just 100 km.
They both share a number of positive points such as a bustling nightlife and an overall low cost of living. They are also quite safe cities.

10:15 Bucharest

Bucharest is the last city in our list, but that doesn’t mean it is less attractive than the others.
The capital of Romania is also one of the largest cities in the Balkans, and is the perfect place if you want to enjoy delicious restaurants and a bustling nightlife.
Romania is the second most affordable country in the EU after Bulgaria, and that can be felt in Bucharest.
Bucharest has some of the cheapest real estate among all EU capitals, and the overall cost of living is quite low for Western standards.
Romania is a great place for digital nomads, and has some of the fastest internet connections in the world.
