(9 Sep 2016) Three villages in the Algarve region in southern Portugal, including a holiday resort, have been evacuated as hundreds of firefighters continued to battle wildfires across the country on Thursday.
At least 600 firefighters were on the ground battling the flames with the aid of vehicles and aircrafts.
The Algarve is a popular tourist destination, particularly in the summer period.
In August, wildfires in mainland Portugal and on Madeira island killed at least four people, burned down dozens of houses and a huge areas of forest.
Forest fires are common in Portugal, and elsewhere in southern Europe during the summer, but a mixture of temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius (86 Fahrenheit) and strong winds have caused damage on a scale not seen for years.
