(12 Mar 2021) People in Portugal on Friday gave a generally warm welcome to the government's plan to open the economy, announced the previous evening by prime minister Antonio Costa.
He said the easing of restrictions would take place gradually, and most measures would remain in place until after Easter.
Costa said nurseries, elementary schools and hair salons would be the first to reopen next week, with restaurants and cafes operating close to normal only after May 3.
He said the plan will be reassessed every two weeks to see if it was causing a new surge of COVID-19 cases.
The lockdown was imposed two months ago to combat a surge that put Portugal close to the top of world rankings in terms of daily infection and death rates.
Portugal, a country of 10 million people, has had a total of around 800,000 cases and 16,635 deaths.
